Abstract
This study is aimed at considering the environment factor affecting healthpromoting behavior by overcoming the limit of the existing research works with a focus only on cognitive aspects such as an individual¡¯s belief and attitude, etc. For this purpose, this research planned to confirm the influential factors on senior citizens¡¯ health-promoting behavior through literature review, and look at the paths between the selected factors by setting up a research model by adding ecology-systematic viewpoints to the health promotion model in an effort to look at the causal relationship between the factors, and also on the basis of the result of the above mentioned process, this study is going to suggest the basis of a vital role of health centers and other public institutions in local community in putting senior citizens¡¯ health promotion into practice.
For this research, this study used convenience sampling of the senior citizens aged 65 and over who can draw up a questionnaire on their own or respond to interviews. Through the process of conducting a survey on the elderly people who visited 3 public health centers or a sports center located in downtown Busan, and the ones who lived in Gimhae-city, and Changwon-city over the two weeks from February 28 until March 13,2011, this study used the final 298 copies of questionnaires for this research. Among the influential factors on a senior citizen¡¯s health-promoting behaviour through literature review, this study selected a senior citizens¡¯ subjective health condition, social support and local community environment as exogenous variables, and also selected perceived benefit, perceived barriers, and self-efficacy as endogenous variables, and the results of path analysis between the final variable, or health-promoting behavior and these variables are as follows: First, the results revealed that social support and local community environment have an influence on a senior citizen¡¯s health-promoting behavior directly and indirectly; especially in case of social support, its direct influence on a senior citizen¡¯s health-promoting behavior was found to be very high (¥â=.483, p<.001). Second, Social support and local community environment were found to have an influence on the perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and perceived benefit and also found to have an influence on the elderly people¡¯s health-promoting behavior through this vehicle. Third, the subjective health condition was found to have an influence on neither senior citizen¡¯s health-promoting behavior, nor self-efficacy, perceived benefit, and perceived barriers, showing the result different from that of the existing research works. This researcher thinks that it¡¯s because the survey subjects were in such good health condition that they werent sensitive to the subjective health condition. Fourth, self-efficacy showed a difference in comparison with the existing research works in that it was found not to have a direct influence on the elderly people¡¯s health-promoting behaviour. Fifth, it was found that the explanatory power against the perceived barriers from a model was estimated at 15. 9%; 38.1% explanatory power against the perceived benefit; 31.2% explanatory power against self-efficacy, and the explanatory power against health-promoting behavior was 51.0%, showing a comparatively good explanatory power.
The research results makes it possible for us to estimate that the more senior citizen¡¯s health-promoting behavior is exposed to well-fostered local community environment for the elderly people¡¯s healthy life and high social support environment, the lower the realistic barriers doing harm to an individual¡¯s health promotion become while raising self-efficacy. Accordingly, the elderly people themselves are supposed to make efforts to improve their lifestyle or undesirable habits in order to maintain and ameliorate their own health with the awakening of the benefit of healthy life through the practice of health-promoting behavior. Such efforts should be made aggressively by the public medical institution of a local community-a public health center, and other public institutions or welfare facilities are also required to participate with the elderly people in their wish for health-promoting behavior and also to make efforts to efficiently use the resources in link with a public health center.
